Your Questions About Oxygen Therapy

Richard asks…

can anyone tell me how beneficial oxygen is for vascular dementia? and how can one get hold of it?

having heard from a friend whose parent had dementia and when admitted to hospital for something else was put on oxygen and became very lucid and their memory was restored to a great degree after 7 years in a home for people with dementia. unfortunately she died of a different problem so we have no idea if oxygen therapy could have helped long term. Any ideas ?

Your Questions About Hydrogen Peroxide Lewis Structure

Helen asks…

How to write a Lewis structure?

I am supposed to write a Lewis structure describing the bonding in each these polyatomic ions:

a. the hydrogen sulfide ion, HS-

b. the peroxide ion, 0 2^2-

admin answers:

Are you familiar with the concept of valence band electrons? You need to have a decent understanding of that to competently draw Lewis diagrams

Mark asks…

Could someone help me with this chemistry problem?

Hydrazine (Nh2Nh2), hydrogen peroxide (HOOH), and water all have exceptionally high suface tensions in comparison with other substances with similar molecular weights.
(a) Draw the lewis structures for these compounds
(b) What structural property do these substances have in common, and how might that account for the high suface tensions?

I think I know how to do (a) but I am totally puzzled on (b)

Could someone help me with this?

admin answers:

You’ll find structures on Google. Impossible to draw here. All three materials show an extremely high degree of hydrogen bonding and this accounts for the surface tension values.

Your Questions About Hydrogen Peroxide Lewis Structure

Daniel asks…

what is the Molecular shape of hydrogen peroxide?

and how do you recognize the molecular shape by looking at the lewis structure. and how do you recognize the where the net dipole exists?

admin answers:

Formula for hydrogen peroxide: H2O2 (note that there are 14 total valence electrons)

H—O—O—H

As you can see, each oxygen has two bonding pairs and two lone pairs. According to the VSEPR theory, this results in a bent shape at each oxygen (like H2O). Since there are 4 total electron pairs, you know that sp³ hybridization occurs. To determine the direction of net dipole moment, first draw the two dipole vectors. Then add up the vectors, and you will find the direction of the net dipole moment.

***The guys above me know nothing about chemistry. Look up hydrogen peroxide online; you’ll never see it shown as a linear molecule. Also, it has nothing to do with benzene.

Mary asks…

What does the compound C2H6O2 look like in its Lewis dot structure? There are two different peroxides that?

have this molecular formula. Peroxide also contains an O-O single bond. One of them is the two oxygen bonded together with two pairs of lone pairs around them and the C bonded next to it with 3 hydrogens bonded around each. What is the other Lewis structure?

admin answers:

It might be an ether?

CH3-O-CH2OH

Your Questions About H2o2 Decomposition

Mary asks…

How much heat is released when 670. kg H2O2 decomposes in this reaction?

Liquid hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent in many rocket fuel mixtures because it releases oxygen gas on decomposition.

2 H2O2(l) —> 2 H2O(l) + O2(g) Hrxn = -196.1 kJ

How much heat is released when 670. kg H2O2 decomposes?

Answer is in kJ ______ Thanks!

admin answers:

2 H2O2(l) —> 2 H2O(l) + O2(g) Hrxn = -196.1 kJ
(2 H2O2 weighs in at 68.03 grams)
————-
How much heat is released when 670. Kg H2O2 decomposes?

670,000 grams H2O2 X -196.1 kJ / 68.03 grams=

1,931,039.7 kJ

ANSWER 1,930,000 kilojoules (3sigfigs)

Daniel asks…

CHEMISTRY PROBLEM: Consider the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as represented by:?

2 H2O2(l) 2 H2O(g) + O2(g)

(a) The coefficients in this balanced chemical equation represent the _____ of reactants and products involved in the chemical reaction. Select all that apply.
-weights
-masses
-molecules
-moles

(b) If 6.0 moles of hydrogen peroxide decompose, then____ moles of O2 will be produced.

(c) If 6.0 moles of hydrogen peroxide decompose, then____ grams of O2 will be produced.

admin answers:

(a) moles and molecules

(b)
the equation tells you that 2 moles H2O2 reacts to form 2 moles O2
This is a 1:1 reaction ratio
So 6.0 moles H2O2 will produce 6.0 moles O2

(c)
you know that you will get 6.0 moles of O2. Now work out what the mass of 6.0 moles of O2 is.

Moles = mass / molar mass
Therefore mass = molar mass x moles

mass (O2) = 32.00 g/mol x 6.0 moles
= 192 g
